Using Bayesian networks to model the operational risk to information technology infrastructure in financial institutions

چکیده
Abstract This paper describes the use of Bayesian networks (BNs) to model the operational risk to information technology (IT) infrastructure in financial and other institutions. We describe a methodology for modeling financial losses that might result from operational risk scenarios involving data centers and operational locations, applications and systems, processes, and ultimately IT supported customer-facing services. We focus on modeling the causes and effects of unexpected loss events using a Bayesian network model of the IT infrastructure combined with assessments of the severity of impact of these events in terms of the Value at Risk (VaR) for the organization. We use a state-of-the-art Bayesian network tool to simulate an example analysis of the model. The work also illustrates how ideas commonly used to measure risk in other industries, especially the Aviation and Nuclear sectors, readily translate to operational risk in finance. Enterprise risk management represents a process of assessing exposure to risks in an institution. It is a systematic mechanism and a comprehensive tool for predicting events, including unexpected events, and their impacts. This paper is a conceptual study. It aims at designing a model for testing the mediation effect of information technology (IT) quality on the relationship between the enterpr...
متن کاملMicrofinance Institutions’ Operational Infrastructure in India: Assessing the Efficiencies through OLS Model
This study attempts to examine the operational efficiency of thirty-two microfinance institutions in India. Operational efficiency in microfinance institutions refers to how well microfinance institutions allocate the input resources. Since the study is an exploratory nature, therefore, the data are collected from mix market on annual basis. It covers the seven-year period ranging from 2005-06 ...
متن کاملEstimation of Products Final Price Using Bayesian Analysis Generalized Poisson Model and Artificial Neural Networks
Estimating the final price of products is of great importance. For manufacturing companies proposing a final price is only possible after the design process over. These companies propose an approximate initial price of the required products to the customers for which some of time and money is required. Here using the existing data of already designed transformers and utilizing the bayesian anal...

To enhance Patient’s safety, we need effective methods for risk management. This work aims to propose an integrated approach to risk management for a hospital system. To improve patient’s safety, we should develop flexible methods where different aspects of risk and type of information are taken into consideration. This paper proposes a fuzzy Bayesian network to model and analyze risk in the op...
متن کاملModelling Operational Risk in Financial Institutions using HDBNs
This paper describes the use of Hybrid Dynamic Bayesian Networks (HDBNs) to model the operational risk faced by financial institutions in terms of economic capital. It describes a methodology for modelling financial losses resulting from intentional or accidental events and characterises these by their ability to evade controls and ultimately lead to increasingly severe financial consequences. ...
